This year the news staff have decided to add something new to its social media. Staff members decided to add a little cartoon.
This idea was brought up by news staff editor junior Keria Sweeney. She has been working in news staff for three years.
Sweeney came up with this idea last year at the Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) states press convention last year. She thought this would be a fun thing to start doing.
“We were at OSMA and we were talking about things that did and did not exist in the News Staff. I got a brilliant idea to start a comic strip because it’s something fun to do and gives me a break from writing,” Sweeney said.
For this cartoon Sweeney decided to do a doodle style. Sweeney’s whole idea of a doodle style came from, when a teenager was to draw or “doodle” a little picture in their notebook when they were taking notes. Sweeney also decided to do this because it is something easy to do, as if someone else could finish it when she graduates.
“A doodle style is easier to pick up And I think it makes it more versatile because other people can use it , other people can sketch it out, other people can take over my project,” Sweeney said.
The whole doodle is about a little bird exploring a student’s notebook page. This doodle is actually a little doodle bird. He gets his name “Doodle” by finding that word written on the page.He thought that word was cool , so he decided to name himself “Doodle”.
Sweeney’s first thought was actually not to make a bird. Her idea was to make an eagle since the newspaper is The Eagle
“ When I was originally going to start this comic, I was like we’re The Eagle, the newspaper is called The Eagle. I want to make it more cute and quite a little funky little thing. Also Ernie the Eagle is kind of scary to draw. So instead of doing Ernie the Eagle I did Doodle the bird, Erney might show up as a side character though, I haven’t decided yet,“ Sweeney said.
