Have you ever wondered who made all the fantastical lighting happen in GlenOak’s productions? Students have the ability to be behind the scenes and help make a fantasy come to life by joining the Light and Sound career tech.

“You get a lot of practice with sound and live sound technology. Lighting design, stage management, stage crew. Along with almost all other technical aspects of theatre when you’re with me,”  Light and Sound teacher Anthony DePinto said.

When it comes to the light and sound department, the main focus is creating the magic behind the scenes for every show that GlenOak produces. By magic, it means all of the special effects, lighting and sound effects.

“We start with learning stage and theatrical terms, how to move around the space. The first year we learn about lightning,  the second year we focus on sound,” DePinto said.

When entering the class, regardless of whether it’s the intro course or the career tech, the work will range from working in class to assisting with show production.

With the skills that people learn in light and sound it gives people the opportunity to explore many different careers after high school such as an audiovisual technician, sound engineer, editor, broadcast technician and many more careers revolving around light and sound technology.

“I have a decent amount of industry ties in theatre tech since high school. So I’ve gotten students’ help with shows where they learn to work with new people. I’ve gotten emails for student internships.” DePinto said.

If you enjoy hands-on learning, and have a passion and motivation for theatre tech, then consider joining GlenOak High School’s light and sound department career tech, or if you only wish to dip your toes into the water, sign up for the intro course for freshmen and sophomores.

“Someone who has good motivation and enjoys hands-on learning will usually have the best experience in my class,”  DePinto said.
