In past years, study hall students in the main commons would sign in by going up to a table and saying their names, tables would be crowded with students who are ready to sign in.
This year, the main commons study hall began to use a new method, and have a frequent change with technology issues and chromebook wifi problems. But the concern for most monitors is the rate of student skippers rising with them in bathrooms, or around the halls skipping.”I feel that the online sign-in method is more effective for teachers and students. Students no longer have to wait in a long line to sign their name on a paper sheet,”study hall monitor Teresa DeSantis said.
A big issue spreads not just with skipping but with some technology issues containing chromebooks such as chargers, breakdown and fixes There are many positives of having a quicker and easier online method for students to do right at their seat, but not every student’s computer will work as easily and quickly as others, such as poor internet connection or chromebook breakdowns.
Students also feel that the new method gives them more free time, and the method lessens the push and crowd of the lines and gives them space and freedom to sign in from their own personal space
“Easier since everyone is not crowded and shoulder to shoulder while waiting,” sophomore Josiah Felton said.
The method lessens the push and crowd of crowds. And opens up space for the students to be comfortable in the class.
“The only thing about the paper method is that I do not get to see the kids when putting a name to a face, and knowing the kids in my class. More of a border and everyone stays to themselves,” Desantis said.
The online sign-in method may be effective, but students do not communicate or socialize with teachers anymore, making it harder for teachers to know the students who are in their own classrooms.
GlenOak is working on a method to stop students from skipping or avoiding the classes that they have, but for now there are struggles and positive parts about the new 2024 online sign in forms.
