Hip-hop is currently one of the most popular genres in all of music. This year, there is one artist in particular who is having one of the most legendary years in hip-hop history, and he is going under the radar.
Future, a well-known rapper from Atlanta, Georgia, has been dominating the hip-hop space recently. He has broken a multitude of records this year, but not many people are talking about it.
Future has released three separate projects this year, these include “We Don’t Trust You”, “We Still Don’t Trust You” and “Mixtape Pluto”. All of these albums have charted #1 on the Billboard 200, which makes him the only hip-hop artist to ever have three projects chart #1 on the Billboard 200 in one year.
He also has had 49 songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024, which is unprecedented. It is the most Billboard charted songs in 2024, surpassing the likes of Taylor Swift. It is also the fourth most-charted songs for an artist in one year, and is the most-charted songs in one year for a hip-hop artist.
Even though he is putting up these insane numbers, and is carrying mainstream hip-hop, having half of the six new hip-hop albums that have charted on the Billboard 200, it seems as if he is not getting much recognition.
This is not new though. Most of Future’s career has been overshadowed by “The Big Three” a newly coined term to describe the three biggest rappers in the 2010s, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and J.Cole. That should not take away from the impact that he has made over the years.
Future revolutionized the trap genre, a subgenre of hip-hop music that is based out of Atlanta. Without Future, many of our favorite rappers probably would not be rapping right now. He has influenced the genre just as much as many of the rappers who get a lot of recognition for what they have done, but he does not get that same respect.
Overall, Future, though his achievements and impact have gone overlooked, is one of the most influential and important figures in hip-hop, and this legendary year that he is having just further cements his legacy as one of the greatest in the genre’s history.
