The loss of a loved one is something that impacts all. As the people we cherish pass with the seasons, many learn to heal, embrace who they were and look for ways to honor their legacy.
On Oct. 3, The Hall of Distinction induction ceremony was held. During the ceremony, The Plain Local School Board unveiled its newest induction category: Honorary Eagle of Distinction. This new award was appointed to Jared Marcum; a newly graduated senior in the class of 2020 who tragically passed on August 25th of the same year.
“Jared was nominated by his parents for the Hall of Distinction as an inductee. Because Jared was just starting college and had not had an opportunity to begin his career, we decided to add a category to be able to honor him, so that is why we made the new category, Honorary Eagle of Distinction,” Co-Chair of the Hall of Distinction Committee Denise Evans said.
Jared was known for his involvement as an 8 year trombone player in the band, pioneer of the new lacrosse team and most notably, the light and sound program, where Jared thrived at making others in various shows shine with his work behind the scenes. This award engraves Jared’s legacy not just as a student involved in school activities, but as someone with strong character who made an impact within GlenOak High School.
“He didn’t want to be the star, he wanted to make the star shine. He had the biggest heart, he was the kindest, most caring kid you’d ever meet. He always thought about others before himself.” Math Teacher at GlenOak and Father Jason Marcum said.
To those looking to honor their loved ones, seeing past their accomplishments and focusing on who they were to their community is most important. This year’s Honorary Eagle of Distinction award represents who Jared was, someone that included everyone and thought about others first, everywhere he went.
“I think this exactly encompasses what Jared was and is and will always be, an Eagle, Green and Gold ran through his veins, this was his home, he embodies GlenOak.” Jason Marcum said.
Although this award was created this year, it has already sparked a lasting impact on future Plain Local families. Giving people the opportunity to honor those who never had the chance to be honored.
“It means a lot to me knowing that other students, other kids that did not get the chance who were involved in a tragic accident have the honor to be distinguished and the ability to be recognized as someone who would have made a difference within Plain Local,” Jason Marcum said.
Jared’s parents honoring their son has provided a new way to honor others just like him. This hope of shining a light on Plain Local alumni that are no longer with us is a beacon of hope towards many that have lost a loved one.
“Jared would not want us to cry over him or sit around with tears in our eyes or sour looks on our faces. He would want us to smile and remember all the good times and all the good memories we hold in our hearts.” Marcum said. “He would want us to go out into this crazy messed up world and do what we can to make it a better world for all of us. Go and be the best person we can be. Live our life like he did with compassion, care and love for others as he loved all of us.”
