The volleyball is spiked over a net… The JV team goes wild cheering on their teammates.
JV players may not always have the spotlight shine on them as varsity peers do, however, JV supports varsity in a variety of ways making them an important part of a varsity team.
Sophomores Joruine Johnson and Aburi Broyles played JV volleyball. A common misconception for athletes who play JV is that it was easy to make the team. According to the girls that is not true.
“It may be kinda hard getting on the volleyball team since there’s many girls. You have to stand out to their coaches to be looked at,” Johnson said.
Another common misconception is there are many differences between the teams. According to Broyles this is not the case.
“There’s not any differences between JV and Varsity Volleyball teams. Everyone is treated equally. We’re always able to feel comfortable with one another,” Broyles said.
Being on the JV team means you still go and support your team regardless of your spot. Some JV players serve as swing players for varsity.
“ You dress up for the other game even if you’re not guaranteed to get in the game . In case another person that plays your positions on the varsity team gets injured. They may need someone to feel in their spots, to finish the rest of the game,” Johnson said.
JV and Varsity both watch each other and cheer each other on during games. They also assist each other during practice.
“We assist by passing the balls back to each other while the other team hits, so they never run out of balls while practicing,” Johnson said.
JV teams have an import troll in high school sport. They support their teammates, and also provided the future for next year’s varsity volleyball team. You will always need a JV team.
