In the months of January and February, you may have noticed students running a couple laps around the school, doing pushups, sit-ups, and crunches. These students were involved in the indoor track program.
Indoor track is an after-school program that lasts from January to February. It’s a good way for students to get into shape before the outdoor season starts or for people who want to try track for the first time to see if they want to continue running. It is led by coaches Bryan Krosse and Scott Ferrell.
“We do a lot of conditioning but not a lot of competition. We have one meet that we go to, and that is the indoor Stark County Championship and that is the only time that we as a team compete,” Krosse said. “You don’t have to sign up, we just tell the kids where we are going to meet and when for them to show up. It is not mandatory.”
Krosse highlights that it’s best for conditioning athletes who want a head start and making sure they are in shape when the outdoor track team starts.
Senior Skylan King has been running track for five years and has participated on the indoor team for four years.
“It is preferred to come in every day for the indoor so you get into that routine coming to practice every day for the outdoor,” King said.
Senior Sophia Ngetich also has been running track for five years has found value in indoor track.
“Not only the conditioning but Ferrell also works on our form to make sure our technique is right. Moving forward Krosse should also try to find a track for us to actually train on instead of being in the school because the ground is hard on us and I know some athletes moving from indoor to outdoor that their shins were in pain,” Ngetich said.
They both highlight that indoor track helps athletes get into a routine of showing up to practice and help on technique before outdoor starts.
Indoor track is a program that allows new joiners and returning athletes to get into shape and to help with technique before joining the track team. Is a good way for people to try it before officially signing up.
