There’s no better way to start summer break than grabbing a large bowl of popcorn, sitting next to your friends and watching the theater lights dim as a new movie starts. As the summer slips away and the school year kicks off, it’s time to reflect on all the Blockbuster movies that came out this summer.
Lilo and Stitch
★ ★ ★ ★
Lilo and Stitch 2025 was a perfect way to start the summer. With all of the charm of the original movie, it certainly brings audiences together to experience the same kind of fun. Aside from the nostalgia, the movie alone is funny and endearing in all the important ways. Praise aside, if there’s one thing we can all agree on; the OG is always better.
Superman
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
A super movie with an even better message, Superman is undeniably one of the biggest movies of the summer and for good reason. This movie poses an important question; are all bald people this evil, or is Lex Luthor just jealous of Clark Kent’s beautiful head of hair? In all seriousness, a superhero movie that preaches kindness and love is exactly what the world needed, and thankfully what it got.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
★ ★ ★
While this movie isn’t necessarily fantastic, it’s still a lot of fun. The main cast serve as goofy but fun and endearing characters, and the movie never takes itself too seriously. The campy 1960s setting adds to the film’s charm and makes it stand out from other recent superhero movies that hit the theater. This could be Marvel taking their first steps into a great new franchise.
Jurassic World: Rebirth
★ ★
If you tied a string around your cavity, attached it to a doorknob, and then simply used pliers to yank out the tooth, that still does not describe how pointless this movie is. After getting past the initial awe factor of CGI dinosaurs and likable actors, it’s clear this movie was not trying to do anything new or interesting. That being said, Scarlet Johansson delivers, as always.
Mission Impossible
★
The only thing impossible here is the idea that audiences actually enjoy watching Tom Cruise go on the same mission eight times. If you didn’t get the idea 30 years ago, or the decade after that, then this movie may be of some interest to you. Otherwise, we all can just hope Paramount releases Tom Cruise from his contract before his 100th birthday.
How to Train Your Dragon
★ ★ ★ ★
Next: how to train Hollywood producers into coming up with new concepts, instead of regurgitating childhood favorites. That being said, as far as live-action remakes go this was excellently done. This movie has beautiful graphics and does a good job at keeping the magic from the old movie. All in all, a fun watch.
Happy Gilmore 2
★ ★ ★ ★
The day Happy Gilmore 2 came out, it was like Christmas morning all over again for middle-aged fathers, and luckily old saint Adam Sandler had something for all members of the family to enjoy. This movie is packed with slap-happy humor that keeps the audience invested in the wacky antics on the screen.
F1
★ ★ ★
On the big list of ‘coolest things ever,’ somewhere you’d read the bullet points: Racecars, Brad Pitt and action movies. Clearly Joseph Kosinski read through this list thoroughly before directing F1. This movie has everything you could possibly want from an action-packed summer blockbuster. Consisting of high stakes and tense racing scenes, this movie is never dull. Although there are obviously better movies, this movie is enjoyable simply because of its innate awesome factor.
