GlenOak Ski Club changes location this year

By Carly Shaheen, Staff Writer — Grab your skis, put on your hats, and get ready for ski club. Every winter, a group of high school students and their adviser, Stephanie Werren, travel to Boston Mills to ski and snowboard.

Except this year, there is a big change. Ski club is changing locations.

The 2016/17 ski club season will take place at Brandywine, Boston Mills’ partner ski resort.

“I changed the park this year because both parks offer different skiing and snowboarding venues and I wanted the students to experience both. Brandywine has a newer facility, newer equipment and more terrain park,” Werren said.

The club meets on Saturdays, at 4:30 p.m. at GlenOak High School, until about 10 p.m. when the bus departs back to the school.

Many students who have done ski club in the past are excited about this change. Some club members even see this club as a tradition. Juniors Nathan Hill, Gavin Buckley, and Drake Hisrich have been doing ski club for eight years.

“Going to Boston Mills has been a tradition to me since fourth grade, this year the tradition is broken, but were still really excited to get a change in slopes,” Hisrich said.

There is not only a new location, but a new advisor, GlenOak teacher Chris Schorsten.

“I love to ski! I heard that Brandywine has more options for snowboarders,” Schorsten said.

Ski club is a great way to get involved with the school, as well as have plans in the winter time.

“The best part for me is being outdoors and doing something physical on a cold, Saturday night in Ohio. I also like that the students are mostly off their devices throughout the evening,“ Werren said.

Students are also very excited about the change of location.

“I think it will spark some interest to change things up” said Rosie Ringer.

There is still time to sign up through Dec. 16.
