The GlenOak varsity baseball team has continued its successful season, making it one to remember and holding a 16-8 record, putting itself in position for another playoff run. After winning districts last season, players say the team entered the year with high expectations and has worked extra hard to meet them.
“It’s been really good,” senior Carter Hall said when describing the season so far. “We had a lot of expectations compared to last year, and I think we’ve fulfilled them pretty well so far.”
Although the team lost several players from last year’s roster, players emphasized that strong chemistry has significantly helped the team continue winning important games. Hall said that the team’s “camaraderie” has been arguably their biggest strength throughout the season.
“We get together a lot, whether it’s outside activities or just doing stuff together in general,” Hall said. “We have chemistry. A lot of us played together our whole lives.”
Senior Kyle Moff agreed, stating that the team’s togetherness has continued to prosper and carry over from last season.
“I think it’s very strong,” Moff said about the team chemistry. “The leaders this year continued that year.”
One of the biggest highlights of the season came with the team’s win over Hoover, a team that has always been a challenge to face. Multiple players named the game as a turning point or their favorite moment of the season.
“Hoover was definitely the best win,” Hall said. “Everyone pitched well, everyone played well.”
Junior Lucien Lessard also mentioned the Hoover game as a season highlight, describing it as a “back-and-forth game” that resulted in a close win.
Players say that the team has also improved by remaining focused after difficult losses, learning for them, and learning not to dwell on them.
“You kind of just have to push it aside and focus on the game ahead since there’s so many games,” Hall said. “There’s so many games.”
Hall said maintaining the right mindset has also been important not only for him personally, but for the whole team to stay positive and strong from game to game.
“Stay levelheaded, don’t get too high, don’t get too low,” Hall said. “It’s a game of failure, so you have to have a good mentality.”
As the postseason approaches, players believe the team has a strong chance to make another tournament run if they continue playing as a family and staying consistent.
“I think we have a pretty solid shot,” Hall said. “If we get our first win in the playoffs, I think we’ll get on a roll.”
The team will play its first playoff game on May 27 at home against Brunswick. The game will start at 5 p.m.
