Nathan Alexander, a teacher who often flies under the radar. Alexander is an important part of GlenOak’s teaching staff, teaching geometry to 8th graders, freshmen and sophomores, helping them in their journey through math.
Despite his career now, teaching was not his first choice. Alexander was first drawn to nursing, but switched to teaching later on.
“I knew I wanted to help people out in some way, and when I figured out nursing wasn’t the choice, I knew teaching was my other option,” Alexander said.
Almost any teacher can agree on how the day is somehow always different and that variety happens to be what Alexander enjoys most about his career. Even with the same students day after day, there is always something uniquely different.
“Everyday is different. Even if you’re teaching the same thing every day, the day itself is always different,” Alexander said.
Being a teacher can be a tough job and one that should be more respected. With one of the most disliked subjects being math among students, teaching it can not be easy. However, this fact did not deter Alexander from choosing his specialization.
“I was advanced in math in high school, and I used to tutor kids in high school, so I knew I was able to do that,” Alexander said.
From his high school days, helping and teaching others has always been a part of his life, even before he knew he wanted to be a teacher. From tutoring math to teaching it, he has had an impact on those around him.
He enjoys the entire process of shaping young minds to develop into unique individuals. For Alexander, it always has surprises and moments that make being a teacher worth it. Those unforgettable memories that one can look back on and laugh. He said it was his most memorable moment in his teaching career, and those are the moments that teachers will always remember.
“A student tried to storm out of my room when he was angry, and he was so mad he missed the door handle and slammed into the door,” Alexander said.
Alexander has been a part of GlenOak’s history for many years, and is an important part of the Plain Local community. He is a very understanding teacher and always makes a point of making his students feel welcome and appreciated.
