Freshman Mikayla Tucker is taking her passion for bowling to the biggest stage of her young career, the OHSAA State Bowling Tournament.
After throwing a 589 series at the Stark District competition, Tucker secured her spot among the top bowlers in the state. She will represent GlenOak at AP Lanes in Columbus this weekend, marking one of the program’s proudest moments of the season.
For Tucker, the love of bowling runs through her family.
“It’s been in my family for years,” she said. “I’ve always bowled, but I really started committing to it around 2022, when I was about 12 or 13.”
Her dedication and focus quickly began to pay off. She practiced consistently, balancing schoolwork and tournaments while pushing herself to improve every week. Those long hours in the alley led to this moment, a trip to the state competition in her first year of high school.
“I was surprised,” Tucker said. “I knew I could do it, but when I saw my score, I thought, wow, I could really make it.”
She credits her mom as the biggest influence behind her success.
“My mom definitely,” Tucker said. “But honestly, everyone, my coaches, my family, my friends. They’ve all supported me and told me I could do this.”
As a freshman, Tucker’s calm approach is one to be admired. When it comes to staying level-headed under pressure, her advice is simple.
“Breathe,” Tucker said.
Heading into states, Tucker hopes to enjoy the experience and possibly meet up with some other bowlers she knows.
“I’m kind of hoping I’m paired with Perry, because I know a few bowlers from there,” Tucker said. “I want to do really good and hopefully finish in the top seven.”
Tucker also hopes her journey inspires others at GlenOak to stay committed to their passions.
“Just know you can do it,” Tucker said. “It might be difficult at first, but if you stay committed, you can make it.”
